IPEDS stands for Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. It is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). A part of the Institute for Education Sciences within the United States Department of Education. IPEDS collects data on postsecondary education in the United States in various areas.

Such as institutional characteristics, enrollment, and student financial aid. Degrees and certificates conferred, and academic libraries. IPEDS is mandatory for all institutions. That participate or are applicants for participation in any federal financial assistance program. Authorized by Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended.

What is the purpose of IPEDS?

The purpose of IPEDS is to collect and disseminate data on postsecondary education in the United States. IPEDS provides information on various aspects of higher education. Such as institutional characteristics, enrollment, and student financial aid. Degrees and certificates conferred, and academic libraries. IPEDS data are used by policymakers, researchers, educators, and students. And the public for various purposes.

Such as assessing the state of post-secondary education, and monitoring trends. And changes, identifying best practices, evaluating programs and policies, and informing decision-making. IPEDS data are also used to calculate key indicators of educational quality and access. Such as graduation rates, retention rates, college-going rates, and net prices.

How often is IPEDS data updated?

According to the IPEDS website. IPEDS data is updated annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). IPEDS conducts a series of interrelated surveys that collect data from about 6,400 colleges, universities, and technical and vocational institutions that participate in federal student aid programs. The data collection cycle is divided into three periods: fall, winter, and spring. Each period covers different survey components that capture various aspects of postsecondary education. The data collection calendar for the 2023-24 data collection year is as follows:

Fall collection: September 1 – October 13, 2023
