Academic motivation is a complex construct that can be influenced by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

  • Intrinsic Motivation: This type of motivation comes from within the individual. It involves a genuine interest in and enjoyment of the learning process. Students with high intrinsic motivation are driven by factors. Such as curiosity, a sense of accomplishment, and a love for learning.
  • Extrinsic Motivation: This type of motivation comes from external sources. It involves engaging in academic activities to attain rewards or avoid punishments. Examples include earning grades, receiving praise from teachers or parents, or gaining social approval. While extrinsic motivation can be effective in the short term. Long-term motivation often benefits from a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
  • Achievement Motivation: This aspect of motivation is specifically related to the desire to achieve success. Or demonstrate competence in academic tasks. Individuals with high achievement motivation set challenging goals, take pride in their accomplishments, and are motivated to improve their skills.
