UGC Indira Gandhi PG Scholarship

The UGC Indira Gandhi PG Scholarship for Single Girl Child is an initiative by the University Grants Commission. (UGC) aimed at promoting postgraduate education among single girl children in India. Objective

The primary goal of the scholarship is to incentivize higher education for single girl children and to acknowledge the efforts of their parents in promoting education for girls. Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must meet several criteria:

  • They should be the only girl child of their parents. Twin daughters and fraternal daughters are also eligible under this scheme.
  • Candidates must be admitted to the first year of a regular. Full-time master’s degree program at a recognized university or post-graduate college in India.
  • The age limit for applicants is 30 years at the time of admission to the postgraduate course.
  • The scholarship does not apply to distance education programs or students enrolled in professional courses.

Scholarship Details

The scholarship offers a financial grant of INR 36,200 per annum to each awardee. This amount is intended to cover various educational expenses. But does not include provisions for hostel fees, medical expenses, or any additional grants.

Application Process

Candidates need to apply through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The process includes:

  • Registering as a new user on the NSP.
  • Completing the application form with all necessary details and uploading required documents such as an Aadhaar Card, proof of admission, birth certificate or class 10th mark sheet, and an affidavit confirming single girl child status.
  • Institutions where the candidates are admitted must verify the applications.
  • Applications are generally invited once a year. Notifications are posted on both the NSP and UGC websites.

Selection and Award Disbursement

The selection process is strictly merit-based. Taking into account the candidate’s academic achievements. After selection, the scholarship amount is disbursed directly to the beneficiary’s bank account. Institutions are expected not to charge any tuition fees from the awardees.

Conditions for Continuation

The scholarship is awarded for the duration of the postgraduate course. Provided the recipient maintains a requisite academic standard. A progress report must be submitted by the institution at the end of the first year to continue the disbursement for the subsequent year.
